Right side blind spot detector malfunctioning - where is emitter?

27548 Views 242 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  N_guy_
So my right side blind spot detector in my mirror is on about 50% of the time. Even when I'm lane removed from the edge of the road and no cars in sight.

Really annoying when I go to change lanes and the thing yells at me. Anyway, where is the emitter for this? And is the receiver the same? I wonder if it just needs cleaned?

I do have mud flaps on my car, but I don't feel like removing them just to test this, plus the sensors should be in the rear bumper assembly well behind the mud flaps. I still think it's height related, my summer tires are slightly taller than my winter tires. If it is mud flap related, I should be getting false positives as well on my summers. Though if anyone else with this issue has mud flaps, please let us know your testing results. Thank you!
The sensor is in the rear bumper, so mid flaps don’t affect its operation.👍🇺🇸
I have mud flaps and have the issue. Not sure how hard it is to take them off. I’ll look tomorrow. Anyone have the issue without mud flaps? I also supposed it could be fixed with the 2022.
With mud flaps, without mud flaps, with wheel spacers, without wheel spacers, all on stock wheel and tire set up. But, as I’ve said all along, when the temps rise, and living in Texas, the temps get there pretty quick, the issue goes away. I only get the false positives (only the passenger side, never driver) when ambient temperature is 50ish and below. Just really annoying!!

I think Mattd52 is right. I think it's temperature related. My 22 manual has aftermarket 19" wheels and everything else stock. My driver's side always lights up when the temps drop below 45. I never had a problem during the summer.
I believe it is temp related too, that's the only thing that makes sense. Moisture/dew affecting the sensors possibly? For the record, mine acts up on stock wheels/tires, stock height, with mud flaps, but apparently just when the seasons change lol. Switched down to 18s and winter tires, weather got cold, haven't seen the issue once.

If I'm right on this, it will start to act up again in the Spring when it starts to melt. Then I'll take it in and get it looked at.
Mud flaps possibility:. I know it's not the issue because someone on this thread earlier said he has no mud flaps but experienced issues with BDM system like everyone else so we quickly ruled that out. But if someone wants to remove a few bolts and see if the BSM works again I'm interested 👀 to see.

Temperature related: I really was hoping that was the issue but for me it's not. I Live in the mid Atlantic, I see temps from 100°F🌡 in the middle of summer to as low as. 5° F ❄ in the winter and my BSM system has never worked flawlessly no matter how hot or cold it gets. The only time it works perfectly is in the rain.

It's funny how most of everyone switched to conts dws as a tire replacement. I guess it's what the dealership pushes out as a good all season tire.
Heading to the dealer in two weeks for the DCT recall, my DCT has not had issues so it would just be a TCM update. Will check on the TSB again.

I was at the dealer two days ago for oil change and DCT recall and did not have it... but saw this on the VN Discord and they have this in the US now... Called the dealer and I am going in Monday to get it flashed:

Awesome!!! Thanks for the update!! Will let my husband know. Also I see why I don’t have the issue and my husband does. his car was purchased before April 2022. My car was produced probably at the tail end of April as I purchased it in June 2022. So maybe I got lucky and the issue was resolved during my production.

My theory for the original issue now is that somehow the materials on the tire is reflecting the radar when it bounces back from an object behind the car and the bounce is causing false positive detections.

Perhaps both temperature and rubber compound can affect the radar reflectivity of the tires.

They probably enhanced the filtering to account for this.
Back from the dealer with the new BCW firmware and it's fixed!

Woot! Woot!
I’m curious. I don’t have the issue but should I still get the update?

I would wait until I swap back to summer tires and see if it's all around better. Otherwise if it's newer firmware with improved algo I don't see why not but you will have to raise the issue with the dealer for them to listen and do the update for you.

Yes, no matter. Have to laugh a little though, the 2019 wasn’t equipped with any sensors. Just goes to show you even Hyundai doesn’t know how they equipped their own car.🤣👍🇺🇸
I knew that Hyundai Engineers knew about it and it would just take a long time to test and role out the updates.

The dealership was laughing at me when I told them it because of the tires.. who's laughing now?. I heard them saying, "no he hit something. no way it's because of the tires. Next he will say his engine is misfiring after we change his brake pads". I can't wait to see their faces after showing them the TSB.

Drove almost 2 years without BSD. Would of been nice if they just told us they are working on a update and to please be patient.

Anyways thanks for the update!! This is very good news.

Yes, the update defiantly fixed the issue.
Got my update today, but the true test will come late in the year when the temps drop again here in Texas. The BSW was functioning properly as the temps increased and I’m glad I printed off the TSB to give to the dealer because I didn’t want them to come back to me with the …. “Unable to replicate” excuse.
Then they told me I need 2 tires on the front…apparently I burned them off in 7000 miles! Oh well!
I had the new BCW firmware installed today and I'm glad to report that it is working again
