“A car born solely for the pleasure of driving”. Road & Track, a famous automobile media in the United States, said last year that Hyundai Motor's Veloster N was selected as the '2020 Performance of the Year'. Veloster N is a car that emphasizes the fun of driving. In addition to the exquisite feeling of operation that only a manual transmission can provide, it also provided a rev matching function for drivers who are unfamiliar with the transmission, allowing them to enjoy the high performance emitted by the 2.0L turbo engine more actively. Reporters and purchasers who test Veloster N praised the powertrain's power and excellent handling, as well as the hand feel and directness of the manual transmission.

However, for the driver who owns the automatic transmission license, Veloster N was like a rice cake in the picture. N DCT has a wet double clutch structure for fast shifting and excellent power transmission efficiency.

The N DCT on the Veloster N is based on the smartstream wet 8-speed DCT announced by Hyundai Motor Group at the 2019 HKIPC (Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference). However, as it has a high-performance brand ‘N’ naming, it has transformed into a N DCT that is more suitable for Veloster N by adding high-performance dedicated functions suitable for it.

First of all, N DCT adopts a wet structure to improve clutch cooling performance, unlike dry DCT, which is commonly used in small cars. Cooling oil inside the transmission helps the clutch keep the proper temperature steady. Thanks to this, N DCT responds to the maximum torque (36.0kgf.m) of the 2.0L turbo engine mounted on Veloster N, as well as high torque of up to 58kgf.m.

Various new technologies are applied to N DCT to maximize the efficiency of clutch cooling and power transmission.

The transmission oil pump is the biggest feature that distinguishes wet DCT from dry DCT. The oil pump serves to circulate the oil required for clutch cooling and gear lubrication, and generally has a mechanical circulation structure. However, in this method, even when the clutch cooling was not required, the oil pump would always operate, resulting in unnecessary engine load.

On the other hand, Hyundai Motor developed an on-demand electric oil pump that works only when needed and installed it on N DCT. The new oil pump significantly reduces engine power loss by circulating the proper amount of oil only when shifting or when cooling is required. As a result, in addition to the cooling efficiency, the overall driving efficiency has increased, making it possible to transmit the engine's driving power to the wheels as much as a manual transmission.

A more dynamic shift, 'N Power Shift'

The N power shift function realizes the dynamic shifting feeling of a manual transmission.

In a high-performance car, strong performance is important, but the impression that the driver receives may vary depending on how the performance is produced. Hyundai added a separate shift control logic to the Veloster N equipped with N DCT to maximize dynamic sensitivity and performance in a variety of situations, including acceleration.

The first to introduce ‘N Power Shift’ is a feature designed from the dynamic shifting characteristic of a manual transmission. By controlling the engine speed when shifting up, it creates a push feeling (push feel) that can be pushed with force from a manual transmission or from behind, which doubles the driving fun. Of course, this sense of acceleration can be felt as a sense of discomfort, so it was set to be activated in a specific driving mode. This function was restricted in the normal driving mode or the sports mode, and is only activated in the N mode.

N DCT is equipped with a performance enhancement function that reminds you of a video game.

Proper gear shifting is one of the most important techniques for winning a racing track. However, a person with little track driving experience or an ordinary driver can spend a lot of time and effort to learn the optimal shifting timing. However, with the 'N Track Sense Shift' applied to the N DCT, anyone can continue driving like a skilled person on the track.
Veloster N equipped with N DCT detects lateral and longitudinal acceleration, brake pressure, and the amount of accelerator pedal opening in real time through various sensors mounted on the vehicle, so that you can quickly return to a sharp corner or move dynamically, such as sudden braking or rapid acceleration. Judge whether to drive. When such a driving situation is repeatedly detected for a certain period of time or more, it is determined that the current driving environment is a sporty driving situation such as a track or winding driving, and automatically activates the N track sense shift. At this time, the 'N Track Sense' indicator next to the gear number indicator at the top of the cluster informs you that the N Track Sense shift is activated.

Veloster N is able to understand the driving environment through various sensors.

When the function is activated, when the speed is reduced before entering the corner, the gear is automatically lowered to maintain the high engine speed to apply the engine brake, and during the cornering, the shift stage is kept low to secure the necessary acceleration after the corner escape. The key to N-track Sense Shift is to help drivers focus on entering and exiting corners and steering wheels by calculating the number of gears and shifting timings suitable for track driving.

The racer's researcher took charge of the development of the N-track Sense Shift, and it was set to allow shifting close to that of a professional driver in a real racing situation. Thanks to these outstanding features of the N DCT, the circuit lap time compared to the manual transmission model has been reduced by almost 1 second.

High-performance transmission with sensitivity of a manual transmission, N DCT

N DCT stands out for its design to preserve the characteristics of the manual transmission as much as possible.

It is often referred to as a device that can handle a car like a limb with a manual transmission. The N DCT acts like a normal automatic transmission in D mode, yet boasts excellent acceleration performance and efficiency. At the same time, it is designed to respect the will of the driver as much as possible in the manual mode. For example, in a general car, the fuel efficiency is considered and the transmission protection function is conservatively operated, so that it is frequently shifted even when the driver does not want it. However, like the manual transmission, the N DCT can prevent the gear from changing automatically even when the engine speed rises high.

In N DCT's manual shift mode, you can also see the different sensibility. The automatic transmission supporting manual shift mode can raise or lower the gear by manual operation of the gear knob. I think there's a large portion of people being on the save the manuals train and disregarding what the true effect of this will be. I personally have only owned manual vehicles my whole life, and this is something I love about having my N. That being said I don't think people are recognizing what value this will bring for us. With a DCT coming, more people will be interested in the car. With a greater quantity of Veloster N's on the road, we are more likely to get the N parts, as well as special editions because Hyundai will learn that they will sell, and that this is something we will want. The DCT will not affect us manual owners (as long as they keep the manual) but will broaden our options for parts, support, limited editions, as well as other things. I believe that if it doesn't effect us, why criticize it. Sorry for the long rant, that is just my opinion
I agree, without the dct we probably wouldn't have those sexy bucket seats comming :p

To this day im still waiting for the ignorant "MaNUaL's oNly" response from @Veloster N 62 🤦🏽‍♂️

Sad he couldn't ever accept the fact that it was inevitably coming out & made the biggest ass out of himself for whatever his agenda was.

I'm glad the DCT is here & is outperforming if not keeping up with cars such as the CTR. :)

Ps. I still don't wanna row gears 35k miles per year(personally) as a daily to and from work in traffic.
