When I first got this thing, I was getting around 21 MPG combined, only 24 hwy! I'm thinking whoa.... This IS a 4 banger right? They aren't hiding a couple more cylinders in the glovebox are they?

I checked. No they aren't.

But I'm approaching 3k miles the MPG is getting a lot better. I guess it just needs to break in more. I've had other new cars and engines in cars, but I've never seen this much of a dramatic difference. I got close to 30 yesterday on the hwy on a long road trip. Around town I'm getting low to mid 20s combined. Around 24

Throttle is pretty touchy on this car even in normal mode. I'm not sure that eco mode does anything except make the gas pedal much less sensitive.

With that in mind, I've been able to get to 31mpg hwy on cruise control, set around 77 mph. The point is just watch your fuel efficiency gauge - bc the throttle is so sensitive, it's very easy to start accelerating rather than maintaining speed, which kills mpg.

Also - despite what the dash says in normal mode (always tells you to upshift), upshifting early doesn't necessarily save gas. Try driving in 6th at 2k rpm while maintaining speed, and then downshift to 5th (around 2,600 rpm) and maintain the same speed. See how the mpg gauge changes. Accelerating or even maintaining speed at low rpm is not optimal and is progressively worse as the rpms drop lower and lower. The shift reminder has been debated in forums for other cars, and the consensus is that the upshift reminder is just a dumb thing that comes on with no real regard for the driving conditions, just arbitrarily set by the manufacturer. I find best fuel economy and practical usage when I'm rolling in the 2300 - 2600 rpm range.

didn't really purchase the VN for fuel economy being it's not really it's bailiwick. It's a bit contrary to the reason N-Division actually made the VN. Plus, I believe the N-Mode button gets the better of all of us from time to time.

We have another Hyundai that suits this format quite well and is a daily driver that regularly attains 40+ mpg.

Truth. I have a lifetime average of 17.7mpg right now, but that includes a couple of hpde and autox events that really bring that average down. Most tanks I get about 22mpg.

We have the diesel wagon for fuel economy.

We have an Ioniq that gets 55mpg for fuel economy!

Rev matching makes a big difference in MPG. I do my own Rev matching, I don't use that car's and I know it isn't good for gas mileage, but it is good for comfort and the trans.

I'm pretty sure that Eco mode does more than change pedal response. When I engage Eco mode, I feel the engine lose a little power. I can switch it over at steady throttle on the highway and the difference is subtle but noticeable. I think it lowers the timing. That's the kind of sickening feeling it gives me. Kind of like when my FRS would get a CEL and pull timing.

I'm in N Custom most of the time but I don't romp it 24/7

This thing eats a substantial amount of gas just idling.

My average according to my fuel tracking app is just a bit over 16MPG. 3600 miles 2022 6MT. That average includes roughly 400 track miles. The hotter it is, the more fuel the VN uses to keep cylinder temps in check. I have to idle my VN at the grid for longer to keep oil warm before sessions because of the massive oil cooler I recently installed. On a cool day on the track, I get about 12MPG. On a hot day, maybe 6-7. It's thirsty and runs pig rich, but I'd rather have it like that than it running lean and risking detonation. From a reliability and consistency perspective, Hyundai did a good job with the tuning for the VN, considering all the emissions standards they need to adhere to.

I have about 9k miles on my 22 DCT, I never reset the mpg monitor since new and my overall average is 22.4 mpg for 9K mikes. I've seen as low as 14 and as high as 35. Not at all disappointed since my Ram 2500 diesel gets 13mpg..
